I’ve recently started going backwards on serve which puts pressure on me returning from my opponent’s first attack. Any ideas on how to fix this
There are a couple of options you could work on.
You could try to develop a heavy backspin serve, which if unreturned would bounce twice on your opponents side of the table. This is much harder to attack and will force your opponent to push, rather than attack (unless your opponent has a very good flick). Then if this serve is pushed back, you have the opportunity to get the first attack on the table. This does require that you have decent forehand or backhand topspin technique. But if you do, then this serve and topspin tactic should be very effective. I have a team-mate who uses this tactic often.
Alternatively, you could try using some long, fast topspin serves. These will often get returned fast, but if you are expecting this, then you can prepare and then attack your opponent’s return. For this tactic to work, the serve needs to be very long, low over the net and fast. if it’s too high or short, then it’s a bit too easy to attack.
Finally, whatever serves you do, try to keep them low over the net and well placed.
